Used mobile phones that you buy from the internet or obtained from friends must be activated before they can be used. Fortunately this process is very easy to do with Verizon. This guide will be very helpful, both for old Verizon customers and new customers who want to start Verizon services.

Activate On Mobile

Insert the SIM card. The SIM card contains phone number information as well as your account and services. On most phones, the SIM card is inserted behind the battery or nearby. You must have a SIM card from Verizon and a valid phone plan before you can activate your phone.
Remove the back cover of the phone and remove the battery. You will see a slot for the card with the words "SIM."
Push the card until it locks into position. To eject it, push the card and the card will pop out.
When the battery is removed, write down the IMEI / IMSI / MEID number located on the back of the battery. This is a Device ID that Verizon staff may ask if you have trouble activating.
Reseat the battery and turn on the phone

Contact * 228. This is to call the automatic activation service on Verizon. The phone can make this call without having to be activated.
Select option 1 to activate the phone. Enter your 10 digit cell phone number including the area code. If you are using a new phone package, the phone number is listed on the receipt.
Enter the last 4 digits of the account holder's Social Security number. This is to ensure that the owner of the legitimate account authorizes phone activation.

Let the phone restart. During the activation process, the phone may restart itself once or twice. Verizon is sending a mobile programming signal.
The activation process can take up to 15 minutes, depending on your phone. When you are done you will see the signal bar at the top of the screen.

Activating Through the Internet With Phone Packages

Log in to your Verizon account. You will add the device to the phone package through the account settings page. Go to Verizon home page and log in to My Verizon using your account information.
After you log in, point the mouse to the "My Verizon" tab and then click "Activate or Switch device" from the drop-down menu.
Enter the requested information, such as the mobile number for the activated device, the last 4 digits of the account holder's SSN, and the IMEI / IMSI / MEID number located under the battery.

Turn on the phone. The activation process will start automatically. Your phone may restart itself once or twice during the activation process. When you are done you will see the signal bar at the top of the screen.
Make sure the SIM card is installed correctly.

Activate via Internet Without Telephone Packages

Visit the Verizon Wireless device page. The Device Activation page is here. This site will check if your device is compatible with the Verizon service, and display the service packs for that device.

Enter Device ID. The website provides specific instructions for finding IDs. Most IDs are printed on the back of the battery. There are three types of Device ID: IMEI / IMSI / MEID. Enter the ID into the appropriate box on the site.

Click "Check Device". If the device is compatible with the Verizon network, you will be given a choice of service packs. After you select one of the packages and sign the contract, the phone will be automatically activated.


Tips
If you have difficulty activating, you may contact Verizon technical service at (800) 922-0204. Make sure you have an IMEI / IMSI / MEID number along with your account details.
