We tell you why Verizon will no longer sell unlocked cell phones

Verizon announced that in its plans, will stop selling unlocked phones, as a way to reduce the number of thefts of their devices and deter criminals.

If you are a Verizon Wireless customer you surely know that the smartphones purchased through this company are unlocked, allowing you to exchange SIM cards that can be used by other operators. This possibility, which differentiates the company from the vast majority, has attracted hundreds of new customers over the years.

However, despite this, Verizon has decided to change its mode of operations. The reason is simple: the company notes that this practice has encouraged theft of phones. What happens is that, for obvious reasons, unlocked smartphones are especially popular to be sold or bought on the black market, precisely because they can be used in any provider.

Now, in an effort to stop this systemic problem, Verizon announced that it will begin to block the phones it sells to its customers beginning in April, at least for a certain period of time.

"We are taking measures to combat theft and reduce fraud," said Tami Erwin, executive vice president of wireless operations for Verizon, in a statement, according to Cnet. "These steps will make our phones exponentially less desirable for criminals."

Previously, Verizon sold all of its unlocked smartphones, including iPhones, meaning they were not linked to the Verizon network and could be used with any provider immediately after purchase. Because of this, it had become one of the favorite possibilities for those Apple fans who wanted to have the freedom to choose their phone company, since Apple does not sell its own unlocked models until several weeks or even months after a new release is launched. iPhone With the iPhone X, for example, all Verizon models sold in November were unlocked and could be used in different cellular networks.

Now, the company announced, next spring Verizon will establish a waiting period, where the new phones will be connected to their network for an unspecified period of time before users can unlock them. Details about how long customers will have to wait, or whether they will have to submit a request for greater security and avoid fraud, have not yet been released. We will keep you informed.
